Semiotics, (or Semiotic Studies) is the study of different signs and symbols, and what their use is, or how they can be used to interpret things.
It explores how different signs can be seen as communication, for example, when somebody from another country comes to the airport, the walls have signs to show them what to
do, or where to go, with drawings of planes, or even toilets, as the signs are the same in different countries, and mean the same thing.
Signs can be seen all around us, in buildings, or even on motorways, and this is because signs that contain pictures are easy to read, so if you are walking or driving past a sign quickly, its easy to read, so its the quickest way to get information across to you.
They also use different colours for different signs, in the same way they use different pictures, because they are all associated with something, like the colour red means stop, and the colour green means go.
Some signs also contain a word, just to help you understand it better if its not as straight forward as some other signs.
