Traditional Toning

There are a few different types of toning for black and white pictures, and these give them different distinctive looks when they have been added to them. The 4 most common types of toning are called Selenium Toner, Sepia Toner, Red/Copper Toner, and Blue Toning.

Selenium toning can give you two different colours depending on how much you use, a diluted solution gives a red-‐brown tone, however a strong solution give a purple-‐brown tone.

Sepia Toner creates a warmer tone, and this happens as chemicals are used to convert the metallic silver in the print to a sulfide compound.

Red/Copper toner can work on almost any image, unlike the others, and it allows the image to have a red 'tint' to it, however, it does work better on images that were originally darker.

Blue Toning can be used to intensify an image, and because of this works better on lighter images with more detail, and as it adds a blue 'tint' it works well with night or winter scenes.

I produced my own images with the tones Red/Copper and Blue which are shown below.
